Justice JN. Pandey is an Indian lawyer and former judge of the Supreme Court of India. He spent his entire career at the Supreme Court, serving as an additional judge from 1974 to 1978 and as a permanent judge from 1978 to 1992. After retirement he has been associated with Allahabad High Court and later on, he was appointed as chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), New Delhi in 2009; during this period, he was also designated as Member Secretary to Lokpal Bill Committee by UPA government. He was a member of the Law Commission of India from 1996 to 2002. He has authored many books and articles on the subject.

JN PANDEY is a name that needs no introduction as far as Indian Judiciary is concerned; having practiced at various levels for over 40 years, he has been one of the most prominent and admired legal luminaries in India today. He was born on 20th May, 1936 at Naini (U.P. ); his father was the late Dharmendra Vishwanath Pandey; who was practising at Lucknow High Court; thereafter, he went to St Xavier's School, Lucknow for his pre-primary education; he passed BA (Hons) in English Literature from St. Michael's College, Itanagar (Nagaland); he completed LLB (Hons) from Allahabad University; and MA in Economics from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. He did his articleship with the Hon'ble Chief Justice of India Shri Haren Pandya and was called to Bar at chambers of Raja Ram Gautam, senior advocate in the Delhi High Court on 5th January 1960. After practicing for about five years at the Bar in Allahabad High Court, he was appointed as permanent judge of Allahabad High Court on 21st May, 1974; he was transferred to Madhya Pradesh High Court on 21st August, 1979; and soon thereafter, on 30th April, 1980 he became Judge of the Supreme Court of India; on 31st October 1991 he took his regular retiral from Supreme Court; but, realising that it is more blessed to give than to receive (giving knowledge is better than receiving it),he agreed to become an "additional judge" for three months with effect from 9th January 1992.
